Open Your Heart through ART: Meditative Art Classes

How does painting help you let go?

I have hundreds of practices I have incorporated into myself care over the years and I have shared these experiences with thousands of people. And yet I struggle with periods of darkness and disconnect. These long periods of time feel so dark that I can’t bring myself to practice deep breathing or move color onto canvas. These are practices that have brought me peace and healing for most of my life. When I take time to feel what's going on inside of my heart and mind, it’s almost always some form of unworthiness or self-judgment as if I can only facilitate these amazing experiences for others to feel better. This is such a simple fix, but sometimes I will go months or years without that self-check in: What direction is my heart guiding me to feel into? How am I feeling in this moment? If we don’t check in with ourselves or share within a group that’s designed to hold space for healing, then we lose sight of our own state of well-being or dis-ease.

During any event that I am facilitating an arts and healing experience, I will say, “Remember to breathe. Notice how you feel.” These two reminders to clear your mind and body are absolutely required during any healing practice. I believe this is the best way to check in with yourself for direction. If you feel positive shifts within, then you keep going. If you feel unsafe then it’s time to reflect on where that is in your body and what that feeling is. The heart compass tells all.

If you feel a “hell, yeah!” then keep going. If not, it’s time to slow down and reflect.

Throughout my journey, I have come to realize that self-expression is not merely a tool but a vital lifeline during dark periods. I create a safe space where I can confront my struggles and move through them rather than suppressing them. I have also come to realize that the longer I wait to take time for self-expression, the harder it is to get into flow state. I have learned that prioritizing self-care helps me to stay connected and open and when I don't, I slowly sink into negative self-talk and pull away from people who genuinely want to connect with me.
